A day in the life

A day in our Studios is creativity within constraints: large blocks of time for work and play with clear but broad guardrails, equipping young people to manage their time, set goals, and track progress.

Every School Day Includes Farm-Based Learning

A typical day at Acton Academy Alva is different from that of a traditional classroom. In addition to learner-driven academic work, Socratic discussions, and collaborative projects, agricultural education is incorporated into our daily learning experience. Our working farm provides an authentic environment where learners apply academic concepts, explore agricultural science, and develop practical life skills through hands-on educational activities.

Farm-based learning is not treated as a separate extracurricular program. Instead, it is woven into our educational approach, connecting academic instruction with real-world applications. Whether exploring animal biology, practicing measurement, examining agricultural systems, or developing responsibility through age-appropriate farm activities, learners discover how knowledge and meaningful work come together.

Daily Schedule

Our daily schedule combines focused academic work, collaborative learning, and agricultural education on our working farm. Farm-based instruction is integrated into the learning day rather than limited to one designated class period. Agricultural activities and learning opportunities vary according to the studio, educational objectives, weather conditions, and seasonal needs of the farm.

Each day is broken up into work sprints with a shared purpose or goal.

Learning Beyond the Studio: Our Working Farm

At Acton Academy Alva, learning does not stop at the studio doors. Our working farm offers daily opportunities for agricultural education and experiential learning, creating meaningful connections between academics, nature, and practical life.

Through agricultural instruction and age-appropriate hands-on experiences, learners explore the science of living things, the importance of responsible animal care, and the relationship between people, agriculture, and the environment. The farm also provides opportunities to apply mathematics, develop observation skills, work collaboratively, and practice solving real-world problems.

These experiences support the development of independence, responsibility, perseverance, and respect for living things. By integrating agriculture into our daily educational program, we encourage learners to understand not only what they are learning, but why it matters and how that knowledge applies to everyday life.

At Acton Academy Alva, the farm is not separate from our classroom - it is an essential part of how we learn.
